How to get rid of squirrels

Squirrels can be tricky to get out of your home.  These critters may look cute, but they can have some damaging effects if they camp out too long in your attic or other areas of your home.  They can also be quite frightening to encounter in a dark room.  The best way and safest way to get rid of squirrels in your home is by using a trap.  The following outlines how to use a trap to get those squirrels outside again.

Live traps are the easiest and most effective way to rid your home of squirrels.  Some people have tried using poisons, but this usually means then end up stuck inside your home, which produces a horrible smell until you can locate and dispose of them.  You can try to close up the holes where they are getting in, but they are crafty enough to know how to get around them, so this usually does not work.  That leaves the live trap. 

You should choose a trap that is designed for the type of squirrel you have in your home.  If you do not pay attention to this fact you may buy a trap that is too small, which defeats the point.  Once you choose your trap you need to set out bait.  Good bait to use is peanut butter.  It is strong smelling and tasty to attract the squirrel and lure him into the trap.  You should place the trap around the area they most frequent so they are more likely to see it and take the bait.  Once you have caught it be careful.  It will likely try to escape and bite at you, so use heavy glove when handling the cage.  You can then release the squirrel somewhere else. 

Now you need to close off any places where they got into your home.  Make sure if you have a chimney you have a chimney trap.  You should use wire screening to close entry points as they will chew through wood easily.
